FAQ

Here is some more information about the National Relations Board, Graduate Student Employee Unions, and What You can Do.

What is the National Labor Relations Board?

The NLRB is an independent Federal agency established in 1935 whose
members are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate.

It hears and rules on disputes between employers and employees, and supervises union elections when petitioned by workers.

A labor union for TAs and RAs? Balderdash!

There are recognized graduate employee unions that collectively bargain at over 30 public university campuses across the United States, including Illinois, Michigan, and the University of California system. Public universities are governed by state law, private universities by Federal law.

What is Grad Labor Counts! beef with the NLRB?

The Bush-era NLRB ruled that TAs and RAs at private universities should not have the legal right to unionize, while Barack Obama, for one, thinks that we should. There is currently a case before the NLRB that could green-light collective bargaining rights for grad employees at private universities nationwide, yet it has only until the end of the year to do so. GSU is simply calling on the NLRB to issue a ruling.
